The largest-ever European meeting on food sovereignty kicked off In Cluj-Napoca, Romania today. Five hundred people from over 40 countries gather in Romania this week to discuss concrete strategies to fix our broken food system.
During the opening session several representatives of social movements and NGOs from around the world took the floor to set the stage for five days of discussions on how to reclaim our ever-more corporate-controlled food and farming system.
The room was filled with energy, with the delegations being asked to stand up, a collective singing exercise, a mística to welcome the earth and slogans: “What do we want? Food Sovereignty! When do we want it? Now!” A special thanks was given to conference host Ecoruralis, the teams involved in the organisation of the sessions, the translators and the many volunteers that work on the logistics of the forum.
‘Emphasis MC’ from the UK, with 14 years the youngest delegation delegate, was invited on stage to close the opening session with a rap on soil as a basis for food sovereignty.
At the fair in the food court, all delegations have the chance to present the food sovereignty movement and its main obstacles in their countries and informally exchange experiences with each other.
