Food Sovereignty Meeting on Land Issues - Firenze 10+10

""

Food Sovereignty Meeting on Land Issues at Firenze 10+10 (Access to Land and Land Tenure). Food Sovereignty in Europe is directly related to the ability of its people to decide how and by whom agricultural resources – including, land, water, seeds and livestock – are cared for.

Access to land is a primary obstacle to achieving Food Sovereignty, which will require a great increase in the farming population. However, for those who do not come from farming families, finding land to farm can be extremely difficult. The increased industrialisation of European farming has made many farms untransferable to future generations because of their size, the price of the land and the obligation to contract high debts. (Nyéléni Europe Synthesis Report and Action Plan, August 2011)

How people, communities and others gain access to land, fisheries and forests is defined and regulated by societies through systems of tenure. The rules of tenure determine who can use which resources, for how long, and under what conditions.

The Voluntary Guidelines on the governance of tenure were finalized through intergovernmental negotiations, led by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The purpose of these Voluntary Guidelines is to serve as a reference and to provide guidance to improve the governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests with the overarching goal of achieving food security for all and to support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security. (Voluntary Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure, May 2012)
